Jack Doohan has displayed his full potential in the karting category despite a series of hits at the Commission Internationale De Karting FIA World Junior Championships at Bahrain, in the Middle East.
In the lead up to the CIK-FIA Event, Doohan undertook testing with Ricky Flynn Motorsport in Bahrain.
“STARTING PRACTICE WE HAD SOME GOOD TIMES, I THOUGHT WE WERE ONE OF THE QUICKEST OUT THERE BUT STILL HAD A LOT TO DO SHOWING ON THE DATA. WHEN IT CAME TO THE OFFICIAL TESTING DAY I WAS QUICKEST IN EVERY SESSION OUT OF GROUPS WHICH WAS PRETTY GOOD, I WAS 3RD OVERALL AS I WAS IN THE GROUP THAT HAD NO CIK POINTS.”
Starting strong in practice, Doohan then struggled in the 8 minute qualifying session where he couldn’t get a 100% lap in, and was instead passing other racers each lap.
Fighting against blockage on the track, Doohan finished 26th overall in qualifying.
“WE WENT OUT WITH ABOUT 3-4 MINUTES TO GO BUT EVERYONE WAS STARTING TO SLOW DOWN AND WOULDN’T LET YOU FOLLOW THEM SO IT WAS HARD TO GET A GOOD POSITION AND I DIDN’T REALLY GET A GOOD TIME IN. I WAS 3/10THS OFF THE TIMES I SET IN PRACTICE ON OLD TYRES SO IT DEFINITELY WASN’T THE BEST THAT WE COULD HAVE DONE.”
Proving that his qualifying time was not a reflection of his speed, Doohan was the quickest overall in the following morning’s warm up.
Doohan started Heat 1 in 9th and flew straight to the top outside of the Top 5 before been hit off track and ending up in P22.
“I GOT A GOOD START UP THE STRAIGHT INTO 6TH, ON THE TOP CORNER I GOT SHUNTED RIGHT OFF.”
Heat 2 was a great recovery effort from Doohan, who began 9th and finished 3rd.
“I WAS RUNNING SECOND ON THE SECOND LAP, AND WAS ABOUT TO PUT A PASS ON BUT WAS HIT BY ANOTHER DRIVER WHICH MADE ME GO WIDE AND TWO OTHER DRIVERS WENT PAST ME, BUT STILL MANAGED TO FINISH A SOLID 3RD.”
Doohan flew to 1st in Heat 3, but had a lapse of judgment which saw him finish 2nd.
“GOT TO SECOND AND ON THE LAST LAP I GOT TO 1ST, I WAS BLOCKING AND JUST LEFT THE DOOR OPEN A BIT SO THE DRIVER IN SECOND PASSED ME DOWN THE MIDDLE WHICH WAS JUST A SIMPLE MISTAKE AS I DIDN’T THINK HE WAS CLOSE.”
Heat 4 and Heat 5 were similar situations for Doohan, who was hit off track twice in a row.
“HEAT 4 WE WERE COMING 3RD ON THE FIRST LAP, BUT I WENT FOR A MOVE ON SECOND BUT I GOT TAKEN OUT WHICH PUT ME OUT OF THAT RACE. IN HEAT 5, AGAIN RUNNING SECOND, I WENT FOR THE PAST ON FIRST, BUT HE LOOKED OVER AT ME, TURNED INTO ME AND HIT ME RIGHT OFF THE TRACK. IT WAS PRETTY DISAPPOINTING THAT AFTER 5 HEATS WE ONLY GOT 2 GOOD HEAT RESULTS.”
At the CIK Event there was two pre finals, where there are 30 drivers in each, and the top 17 from both pre finals make the final.
Doohan started in 23rd, but finished in 11th with pass on the last lap.
“EVERYONE IS VERY AGGRESSIVE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE TOP 17 TO MAKE THE FINAL, SO AFTER FIRST LAP I WAS IN THE TOP 17 AND WE DIDN’T WANT TO PUSH TOO HARD AND , I ENDED UP FINISHING UP 11TH WHICH PUT ME IN 20TH FOR THE FINAL.”
In the Final Race, Doohan had worked his way up into 6th before debris go in his Kart’s Motor and stopped him in the middle of the track.
Although Doohan didn’t achieve the final results he was hunting for, he still impressed on his CIK Debut and displayed intense speed and skill.
“WE GOT IN A GOOD FIRST LAP INTO 7TH, I WAS ON THE PASS TO 5TH ON THE CHICANE AND WENT OFF THE TRACK, WHICH PUT A ROCK IN MY MOTOR. I WAS RUNNING 4TH AND THE MOTOR JUST STOPPED ON TRACK SO I WENT TO LAST. I DIDN’T WANT TO NOT FINISH, SO I JUST POTTERED AROUND THE TRACK FOR THE REMAINING 18 LAPS.
I WAS HAPPY WITH MAKING THE FINAL AND WE HAD THE PACE TO WIN IT, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN’T THE BEST RESULTS I LEARNT A LOT AND IT WAS GOOD FOR THE TEAM.”
