Jack Doohan has confirmed he will race in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship with german outfit HWA RACELAB.
Doohan is the 2019 F3 Asia vice-champion and also won the rookie cup in the 2018 British F4 Championship, and got his first taste of F3 machinery in Valencia at the post-season tests with Hitech GP and caught the eye of HWA.
Doohan will take on the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship as well as the 2019-2020 F3 Asian Championship, where he is currently running second in the Championship following the opening round.
The Australian will enter his third season of car racing this year and is expecting to fight for the F3 title from the word go this season.
“I am pleased to be part of the HWA RACELAB team in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship. I can hardly wait for the start of the season. HWA is known for its competitiveness and I am confident that will be the case again this year. The last two years of racing have given me a good basis. I now hope I can challenge for the title with a top team like HWA RACELAB.”
Doohan will be team mates with Jake Hughes, who finished 5th in the Championship in 2019, and Enzo Fittipaldi, grandson of former F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi and 2018 Italian F4 Champion.
HWA boss Ulrich Fritz says the outfit’s decision to go with Fittipaldi and Doohan is not just down to their surnames, and wants to have more than one driver fighting for podiums every weekend.
“I am delighted that we have managed to secure the services of Jack and Enzo. However, we did not opt for them because of their famous names, but because of their immense talent, which they have both demonstrated emphatically in recent years. The FIA Formula 3 Championship is the next level for them both.”
Doohan’s father Mick, five-time consecutive motorcycle 500cc world champion in the 1990s, added:
“I’m thrilled to see Jack join HWA and the FIA F3 championship this year. At 17 later this month this championship will be a big jump for the boy but I feel he will be in good hands at HWA. I will enjoy watching from the sidelines.”
Round 1 of the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship will be held at Bahrain International Circuit from March 20-22, alongside the Formula 1 Championship.
