Jack Doohan has finished P3 & P2 in Rounds 19 & 20 at Rockingham, Northants this past weekend in the British F4 Championship.
Round 19 – Position 2
Doohan began the Rockingham event finishing P3 in Free Practice on a tough drying track.
Doohan was the only one of the top four drivers in Qualifying that improved his lap time as the session came to an end, recording a lap of 1m 18.823s to leap up to the front row with just minutes to spare to finish P2.
The Red Bull Junior Team Driver had a solid race, chasing down the leader while defending his position across the 15 laps.
“WE WERE MISSING A LITTLE BIT OF PACE COMPARED TO PASMA, BUT THAT’S SOMETHING I HOPE WE CAN FIND OVERNIGHT. I THINK WE NEED TO FIND SOMETHING IN SECTOR THREE. I’M STILL PLEASED TO PICK UP THE PODIUM AND ALL THESE POINTS FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP. I NEED TO HAVE A FEW MORE CONSISTENTLY HIGH-SCORING RACES AND THEN EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE WITH REGARD TO THE TITLE. IT LOOKS LIKE THE CONDITIONS WILL BE DIFFERENT TOMORROW WITH THE WEATHER. WE START SLIGHTLY FURTHER BACK IN THE REVERSE-GRID RACE SO WE NEED TO ADAPT QUICKER THAN THE OTHERS IN THOSE CONDITIONS TO MAKE OUR WAY TO THE FRONT.”
Round 20 – Position 3
Starting from P6, Doohan made his way up to P4 and at the Safety Car restart was keen to stake his claim for a podium place with a brave lunge down the inside of team-mate Hauger at Deene and completing the overtake through Yentwood.
Finishing in P3, Doohan starred on the podium once again and took the lead in the Rookie class.
“THE AIM FOR THAT RACE WAS TO GET INTO THE TOP THREE AND WE DID THAT. POINTS MEAN PRIZES. WE’RE CLOSING THE GAP ON THE GUYS IN FRONT AND WE’VE NOW JUST TAKEN THE LEAD IN THE ROOKIE STANDINGS. I’M NOW JUST GOING TO TRY TO BUILD ON THAT AND KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING. I TRIED TO MANAGE THE TYRES AS BEST POSSIBLE TO MINIMISE DEGRADATION. I SAW PASMA COMING IN THE CLOSING STAGES AND HE WAS SO FAST IN THE CLEAR AIR, BUT ONCE HE GOT CLOSER TO ME HE FOUND IT MORE DIFFICULT. MOST OF THE CORNERS WHERE YOU OVERTAKE HERE ARE PRECEDED BY HIGH OR MID-SPEED CORNERS AND THAT’S WHERE IT’S HARDER TO FOLLOW A CAR IN FRONT AND THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT HARD TO OVERTAKE.”
Round 21 – Position DNF
At the beginning of the race, the field charged into Deene hairpin but Doohan’s team-mate Dennis Hauger connected with the #33 Driver and damaged what had been a strong point scoring weekend for the Australian who was forced into a DNF finish.
Following the race, Hauger was handed a five-place grid penalty for driving in a manner incompatible with general safety.
Despite the DNF Result, Doohan claimed the Rookie Cup for the 7th Stop of the British Formula 4 Championship.
With three rounds remaining in the series, Doohan remains 4th in Championship Standings but now leads the Rookie Cup by one point.
Doohan will now turn his focus to Rounds 22-24 of the British Formula 4 Championship at Knockhill, Fife on August 25-26.
