Jack Doohan has claimed his maiden Car Racing podium on his debut in the British Formula 4 Championship opener, with a P3 finish this past weekend.
Race 1 – Position 9
The Red Bull Junior Team Driver qualified P7 at the Brands Hatch Indy event, beginning his first British F4 Race ever from Row 5.
Doohan claimed his first top ten result at the conclusion of the 26 lap Race, kicking off the season wth a P9 finish and a P3 finish in the rookie ranks.
Race 2 – Position 3
Beginning from P9 on the Grid, Doohan finished P3 in only the second car race of his promising career since graduating from Karting, despite his lack of experience in the category and the car not been in the desired window for set-up.
Doohan set up his podium finish with an impressive perfectly-judged pass on Kiern Jewiss and team-mate Dennis Hauger around the outside of Druids in one fell-swoop on lap 12.
The P3 finish also served as Doohan’s first Rookie class win.
Race 3 – Position 7
Doohan began the 23 lap Race from P10 but had an off-track run in the tricky conditions with rain falling just prior to the race.
The Arden Driver battled back into points paying positions wrapping up the weekend with P7 overall finish and P3 in class in Sunday’s Race 3.
Doohan now sits tied for 5th in the British F4 Championship Standings and is tied for 1st in the Rookie Cup Standings.
Doohan was pleased with the weekend but believes he now needs to find the right balance with the car set up to get the most out of his performance.
“This weekend was good but qualifying was a bit of a mess and on a track like this it is very hard to pass. In Race 1 I felt that the car was not quite right, but Race 2 was a positive as we finished P3 with a good move into Turn 2. That was really fun. In the last race, unfortunately, we made up four positions on the first lap and then a car spun in front of us so we had to go wide and off the track. I dropped back to last but we ended up finishing seventh after some good passing. All in all, it was not a bad weekend with a third and three class podiums, I can’t complain too much!”
Doohan will now turn his focus to Rounds 4-6 of the British Formula 4 Championship at Donington Park, Leics for on April 28-29.
