The 2016 Australian Kart Championships has seen Jack Doohan crowned as the new title owner, after he had an unbeatable lead after the first day of Round 5 at Melbourne’s Todd Road circuit.
Doohan raced in the Elite Junior KA2 Category throughout the season and the final Victorian round.
After a clash during the first practice session of the weekend, resulting in a DNF, Doohan came back to finish 2nd, 1st and 2nd in the remaining practice sessions.
“WE STARTED THE WEEKEND OFF WITH PRACTICE 1 WHICH WASN’T THE BEST, ON THE SECOND LAP WE CAME TOGETHER WITH ANOTHER UNEXPERIENCED DRIVER WHICH PUT US OUT OF THE SESSION”
The National Junior Competition saw Doohan Qualify 7th with engine issues.
“WE QUALIFYING 7TH WITH ENGINE PROBLEMS, SO BEFORE THE HEAT WE CHANGED A BIT ON THE FRONT END OF THE KART AND CHECKED THE ENGINE OUT”
The 4 Heat Sessions determined Doohan’s eventual pole position start for the race, finishing 2nd, 1st, 2nd and 1st in a rolling grid setup.
“STARTED 7TH IN HEAT 1 WE GOT AN AWESOME START AND CAME OUT SECOND BUT THE RACE WAS RED FLAGGED AFTER A BIG CRASH IN TURN ONE.”
After the restart Doohan began in 2nd place and took out the win by 3 seconds.
“WE HAD A 2 SECOND MARGIN HALFWAY THROUGH BUT THE KART STARTED TO COME ON AND THE TIMES STARTED TO DROP SO WE EDGED AWAY FOR THE WIN.”
Doohan lead in the remaining 3 Heats to claim Race Pole Position.
The final Race saw Doohan start at the front, but a push on the first lap sent him down the field.
“I STARTED THE FINALS IN POLE, GOING DOWN ON THE MAIN STRAIGHT I GOT PUSHED WIDE ON THE FIRST CORNER SO GOT PUSHED BACK DOWN TO 5TH.”
Rain sent Doohan and the remainder of the field that he was leading off of the track, with only 2 competitors who had started in 14th and 19th finishing the race.
“WE GOT TO 3RD IN THE RACE, THEN TO 1ST BEFORE IT STARTED RAINING ON THE FIRST CORNER OF THE TRACK, I WAS THE FIRST ONE TO NOTICE IT SO I CAME DOWN INTO THE BRAKING ZONE AND THE KART JUST DIDN’T STOP AND THE TOP 10 ALL WENT OFF THE TRACK.”
Round 5 was Doohan’s 3rd consecutive win, and although he didn’t finish the Race his Championship Points lead was too large for anyone to challenge and was crowned the 2016 Australian Kart Championship.
“IN THE END WE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND CAME AWAY WITH THE VICTORIAN CHAMPION WHILE WINNING MY THIRD CONSECUTIVE ROUND.”
