Jack Doohan has finished 3rd in Round 15 at Croft, North Yorkshire over the weekend after a tumultuous start to the event.
Round 13 – Position DNF
Doohan began Rounds 13 -15 of the Croft, North Yorkshire Event by topping practice in a dominant display as a rookie.
Doohan missed his chance at Pole Position in Qualifying due to technical problems and was forced to start from P13 in the first Race of the weekend.
Unfortunately, the Arden driver’s nightmare Saturday continued when further issues reared their head from the outset, forcing him to limp into the pits at the end of the opening lap and was forced into a DNF Result.
Round 14 – Position 4
Doohan’s Number 33 was repaired in between rounds, and despite starting from P13 the rookie climbed into P8 on the opening lap and then made his way up to the rear of his team-mate in rapid fashion.
Team-mate Hauger held on to P3 and Doohan had to settle for a P4 result in Round 14.
Round 15 – Position 3
Despite having started from the back row of the grid in P13, Doohan was able to put in an inspired performance to clinch final podium spot with belting last corner lunge after picking up four places on the opening lap, and running bravely around the outside of Hoggard and Simmons within the space of several laps.
Doohan saved the best until the very last corner of the race when he claimed a better exit out of complex and sold Tonteri a dummy into the hairpin.
The Red Bull Racing Junior Team Driver switched to the inside and planted his car on the apex to claim the corner and power towards the finish line to take a remarkable third place.
Despite the P4 & P3 Result in the final two rounds of the Croft Event, Doohan has dropped to 4th in Championship Standings and sits 2nd in the Rookie Cup.
Doohan will now turn his focus to Rounds 16-18 of the British Formula 4 Championship at Snetterton, Norfolk on July 28-29.
“I REALLY HAD TO KEEP MY FOOT PLANTED TO HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF HOGGARD INTO TURN ONE. I STILL MANAGED TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN AND EMERGE IN FRONT. IT WAS A REALLY TIGHT OVERTAKE. THE MOVE ON SIMMONS WAS A LITTLE BIT TENSE. I WENT IN PRETTY DEEP, SLIDING AROUND AND WE WERE SIDE-BY-SIDE THROUGH THE JIM CLARK ESSES AND I JUST MANAGED TO DO ENOUGH TO GET AHEAD FOR SUNNY IN. I WAS LUCKY TO PULL OFF THE MOVE AT THE END. TONTERI DEFENDED REALLY WELL. HE SWEPT OUT TO TAKE HIS NORMAL LINE FOR THE FINAL CORNER AND I WENT FOR THE GAP ON THE INSIDE TO GET THIRD.IT WAS A TOUGH MOVE BECAUSE I HAD UNDERSTEER THROUGH SUNNY OUT WHICH I THOUGHT COST ME MY CHANCE, BUT THEN I GOT A GOOD EXIT OUT OF COMPLEX TO SET UP THE MOVE. WE DEFINITELY SHOWED OUR PACE TODAY. IF WE HAD STARTED HIGHER UP THE GRID THIS WEEKEND, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT STORY.”
