Pole Position a Highlight for Doohan in Monza 🇮🇹
Sprint Race - P6
Doohan claimed pole for Sunday’s Feature Race at Monza with a terrific lap and began Sunday’s Sprint Race from the 5th row, promoted to a P9 start following a penalty for a car in front of him on the reverse grid.
Doohan made his way into P8 at lights out, but the Safety Car was quickly deployed on the second lap for incidents further down the field.
On Lap 16 Doohan overtook Iwasa with 5 laps to go for P7 and proceeded to challenge Armstrong for P6.
Unfortunately Doohan was overtaken by Lawson after a challenge for P6 and was pushed back to P8 with 3 laps remaining.
Doohan crossed the line there, but Armstrong & Verschoor ahead of him were penalised post-race and the Australian was promoted to P6.
Feature Race - DNF
At the beginning of the Feature Race, Doohan’s clutch began to fail on the formation lap which would ultimately contribute to a lost opportunity to convert his Pole Position to a Race win.
The Virtuosi Driver dropped down the order after lights out and was caught up in a first lap incident and was taken out of the race.
Despite the DNF, Doohan remains 4th in the Championship and is still in the fight for F2 Rookie Champion which will be decided in Abu Dhabi.
“In the feature race starting from Pole, unfortunately our clutch and steering wheel failed on the formation lap, followed by being taken out. Keeping our heads high during the break and I’m sure our luck will turn. Thank you to to the team for the amazing car all weekend."
Doohan’s final round of the Formula 2 Championship will not be until November, at Yas Island from November 18-20.
