Doohan Signs with Double R for Euroformula Open
Top single-seater squad Double R Racing is delighted to confirm it will contest this year’s Euroformula Open after announcing its first driver signing for the championship – hotly tipped Australian teenager, and Red Bull Junior, Jack Doohan.
Anthony Hieatt’s renowned and highly decorated team, which won the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship and F4 British Championship certified by FIA powered by Ford EcoBoost titles last year, will join the burgeoning Euroformula grid with an expected three-car entry this season.
Australian 16-year-old Doohan, son of five-time 500cc World Motorcycling Champion Mick Doohan, joins Double R for his first year in Formula 3 machinery after an outstanding maiden single-seater season in 2018 where he won the Rookie title in British F4 and also ended the campaign fifth overall.
Quickly becoming a front-running regular, achieving three outright race victories in British F4, Doohan also contested five races in ADAC Formula 4 in Germany and a further two races in the Italian F4 Championship.
Prior to his graduation into cars, Doohan – from the Gold Coast in Queensland – won two Australian Karting Championship crowns – in KA Junior and KA2 – and in 2017 he was third overall in the highly competitive CIK-FIA European Karting Championship, and also sixth in the WSK Super Master Series.
“I’m really excited and fortunate to be racing in this year’s Euroformula Open Championship as a rookie! It has proved to bring some very strong drivers through the ranks and is looking to be pretty competitive this season, so I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got to come out on top. Double R is a very well-known and successful team which I am very lucky to be working with this year. They have a great group of people working with them, who I get along with very well, so I can’t wait to get started! I completed two tests with Double R at the end of last year to learn more about the car and team, which went quite well, so I’m looking forward to getting the season underway.”
Double R will compete full-time in Euroformula Open for the first time this year and is set to field three Mercedes-HWA powered Dallara F317 cars.
The championship, formerly the Spanish F3 Championship prior to 2014, will get underway over the weekend 27th/28th April at Paul Ricard in the south of France. The nine-event season will conclude on 12th/13th October at Monza in Italy.
Speaking on Doohan’s signing, Double R team boss Hieatt said:
“It’s absolutely fantastic to be able to confirm Jack as our first driver for Euroformula, the championship is gaining in popularity all the time, with increasingly competitive grids, and is a great option for drivers stepping-up from F4. “We obviously know Jack’s capability from racing against him in British F4 last year, he’s a terrific young talent with a huge amount of potential – and you can certainly see the same determination and commitment which his father was renowned for in Grand Prix motorcycling! We can’t wait to get the season underway and we’re confident Jack will be a real contender.”
