Race 15 – Position 15

Doohan returned to the Euroformula Championship after missing Round 7 as a result of the dates clashing with the Asian F3 Championship, which the Australian also competes in.

The rain in Spain made its presence felt on Saturday morning when torrential conditions meant officials had no option but to cancel the grid determining session for Race 15.

With times from the practice day used to set the starting order Doohan began the Race from P7.

Doohan was edged back to P10 on the opening lap, but moved up into P9 on lap 4 after Teppei Natori ran wide into the gravel.

Under pressure from Marino Sato, Doohan unfortunately slid wide into the gravel on lap 9 and dropped to P15 where he ended the Race, a frustrating P10 in the Rookie standings.

Race 16 – Position 10

The dry weather returned for Qualifying on Sunday morning where Doohan finished P12.

Doohan put together a very strong start to the race from the sixth row of the grid, gaining no fewer than 3 places, but Lukas Dunner managed to edge ahead of the Double R driver on the second tour for P9.

Doohan then stayed in position for the rest of the race to conclude the final Race in Barcelona in P10 overall, P7 in the Rookie class.

Doohan has dropped from 7th in the Championship to 11th since missing Round 7 and is 5th in the Rookie Standings as just one event remains in the Euroformula Championship, with the finale to be held in Monza, Italy in October.

“Not a good weekend and a really weird one, we had pace in testing on Thursday, we saved our tyres on Friday and then today the pace just wasn’t there. We have no idea what happened, we lost a full second. Saturday in the wet was unfortunate. We had contact but because I was in a points scoring position I kept going, I had a cracked rim and bent suspension and it was hopeless, eventually I decided that I should pit but the team told me to stay out, a bit embarrassing really. Then today we just lost all pace completely in Qualifying. I got a good start and managed to get some positions early which I am very glad about I but then we just didn’t have the pace at all. It was really strange, like driving a completely different car to the one I had on Thursday.”

The season finale, Round 9 of the Euroformula Open will be held at Monza, Italy on 10 – 12 October.
